Computer Overheating: Signs, Causes, and Solutions

Loud fans and random shutdowns? Overheating kills components fast. Learn the signs and how to keep your PC cool.

Electronics hate heat. If your computer sounds like a jet engine or shuts down unexpectedly, it is screaming for help.

Signs of Overheating

  1. Loud Fans: Your fans are spinning at 100% specifically to move hot air.
  2. Throttling: The computer suddenly becomes extremely slow during basic tasks (the CPU slows down to protect itself).
  3. Random Shutdowns: The motherboard cuts power instantly if the CPU hits a critical temperature (usually 100°C).

Steps to Fix It

1. Clear the Vent

Laptops especially suffer from blocked airflow.

  • Don't: Put a laptop on a pillow, blanket, or couch cushion. This blocks the intake vents on the bottom.
  • Do: Use a hard surface (desk, table) or a laptop cooling pad.

2. Dust is the Enemy

Dust acts as an insulator, trapping heat inside the case.

  • Desktops: Open the side panel (with the PC off and unplugged) and use compressed air to blow dust out of the fans and heatsinks.
  • Laptops: Blow compressed air into the exhaust vents (in short bursts).

3. Check Fan Function

Is the fan actually spinning? Put your hand near the vent. If it's hot but no air is moving, the fan motor might be dead. A dead fan = a dead computer very quickly.

4. Thermal Paste (Advanced)

If a computer is 5+ years old, the thermal paste between the CPU and the cooler may have dried out and cracked. Re-applying paste can drop temperatures by 10-20°C, but requires disassembly.

Preventative Maintenance

Dust is the silent killer of hardware ROI. We schedule regular Physical Maintenance Cycles for our clients.

  • Cleaning: We physically remove dust from workstations to maintain optimal airflow.
  • Thermal Monitoring: Our agents alert us if a CPU consistently hits 85°C+, indicating cooling failure.
  • Environment Check: We advise on server room cooling and airflow dynamics.

Heat degrades electronics. Monitoring protects your investment.
