When you delete a file, the computer just marks that space as "available." The data is still there until new data overwrites it. Stop saving new files, browsing the web, or installing programs. Any new activity could overwrite the sector where your lost file lives.

Recovery Methods

1. Recycle Bin / Trash

It sounds obvious, but check it first.

• Right-click the Recycle Bin icon > Open.
• Search for the file name.
• Right-click > Restore.

2. Previous Versions (Shadow Copies)

If you're on a business network or have Windows File History enabled:

• Right-click the folder where the file used to be.
• Select Properties > Previous Versions.
• Look for a version from yesterday or earlier today.
• Click Open to verify, then Restore.

3. Check Cloud Backups

If you use OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox:

• Log in to the web version (browser).
• Look for a "Trash" or "Bin" folder in the sidebar. Cloud services often keep deleted files for 30 days.

4. Data Recovery Software

Tools like Recuva (free) can scan for undeleted files. Warning: Install this on a different computer and run it from a USB stick to avoid overwriting your lost data.
